Our story

Why Equal Edge exists

East London and Essex are home to some of the most vibrant, diverse communities in the country. But for many families — particularly from South Asian, Black, and working-class backgrounds — access to affordable, culturally relevant sport has long been out of reach, blocked by cost, cultural distance, and a simple lack of provision.

Equal Edge CIC was incorporated on 25 May 2026 to close that gap. We are a Community Interest Company — which means our purpose is genuinely and legally the community, not profit. Every surplus we generate is reinvested into programmes.

The name Equal Edge reflects our core belief: when the playing field is genuinely level — when sport is truly open — every person gains an edge. Confidence. Belonging. Health. Community.

We started with cricket because it holds deep cultural meaning for many South Asian communities across our boroughs, yet organised cricket is often inaccessible due to club costs and cultural barriers. Our ambition goes further: inclusive sport and active community life for every person across East London and Essex.

Five values that guide every programme, every partnership, and every decision.

Inclusion before everything

Every programme starts with the question: who is excluded from this, and how do we remove that barrier? Inclusion is the design brief, not an afterthought.

Community ownership

We serve communities, and communities shape what we do. We listen, adapt, and grow based on the real needs of the people we work with.

Radical accessibility

Free sessions for those who need them most, heavily discounted rates for schools and partner organisations. Culturally sensitive environments. Adapted activities. Cost, culture, or ability should never stop someone participating.

Transparency and trust

As a CIC, our accounts are public. Our policies are published. We are answerable to the community and our regulators — and we think that's as it should be.

Long-term thinking

We invest in sustained relationships, long-term programmes, and infrastructure that outlasts any single grant. Community change takes time — we're here for it.

Our legal structure

What is a CIC?

A Community Interest Company (CIC) is a special type of limited company created for organisations that want to use their profits and assets for the public good. Equal Edge CIC was incorporated under the Companies Act 2006 and registered with the CIC Regulator.

Unlike a standard company, a CIC has an asset lock — assets and profits can only be used for the community benefit described in our founding documents. They cannot be distributed to shareholders for personal gain.

This gives our funders, partners, and communities confidence that every pound invested in our work is protected and used for its intended purpose.

What this means in practice

  • Surplus reinvested into community programmes — never taken as profit
  • Our community interest statement is legally binding and publicly filed
  • Annual reports filed with Companies House and the CIC Regulator
  • Accountable to a board of directors, not shareholders
  • Accounts publicly available at Companies House
